SEMINAR ON THE FINDINGS OF FRIM’S GREENHOUSE GAS (GHG) RESEARCH AND THE CARBON FOOTPRINT OF FURNITURE PRODUCTS (CFP)

29 May 2025 – The Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), through its Forest Products Division, organised a seminar titled “Seminar on the Findings of FRIM’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Research and the Carbon Footprint of Furniture Products (CFP)” held at the FRIM Auditorium.

The main objectives of the seminar were to:

  1. Discuss the methods for measuring, reporting, and reducing GHG emissions on FRIM’s campus; and
  2. Strengthen collaboration among researchers, industries, and policymakers to achieve more sustainable development.

The seminar was officiated by YBrs. Encik Mahmudin Bin Saleh, Deputy Director General (Operations) of FRIM. He presented certificates of appreciation to companies that worked with FRIM in conducting the furniture product (CFP) study. These companies included Impressive Transform Sdn. Bhd., K.U.S Industries Sdn. Bhd., Mah Sing Plastic Industries Sdn. Bhd., Apex Office Furniture Exporter Sdn. Bhd., and Meranti Marshal Sdn. Bhd. In conjunction with the seminar, the Deputy Director General (Operations) also officiated the opening of the FRIM Green Furniture Gallery — a central facility for showcasing sustainable green furniture developed through FRIM’s R&D with industry partners. The seminar was attended by agencies such as the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB), the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia (JPSM), representatives from industry, teachers, and students. A prize-giving ceremony was also held for the winners of the Digital Poster Competition organised in conjunction with Earth Day, which spanned from 10 April to 8 May 2025. The competition, themed ‘Save Our Earth,’ was open to primary and secondary school students, and the public, with 1,058 entries received in all categories. Prizes were presented by YBrs. Dr. Wan Tarmeze Bin Wan Ariffin, Director of the Forest Products Division.

Three papers were presented during the seminar:

  1. GHG at FRIM Campus & Furniture CFP – Ts Ghazali Talib (Climate Plus Sdn. Bhd.)
  2. Carbon Stock of FRIM Forests – Gs. Dr. Hamdan Omar (FRIM)
  3. Carbon Trading – Mohamad Iskandar Majidi (Climate Plus Sdn. Bhd.)

The seminar wrapped up with a question-and-answer session moderated by Dr. Suffian Misran. Overall, the seminar successfully met its objectives of raising awareness, sharing knowledge, and strengthening cooperation between researchers, industry, and relevant agencies. Such initiatives not only support the national sustainable development agenda, but also reinforce FRIM’s role as a leading institution in forest-based research contributing to environmental conservation. It is hoped that this ongoing effort will encourage more strategic collaborations and innovations in reducing carbon footprints and preserving the nation’s natural resources.
